it seems the plus minus is basically the people who have played th mosr cause those loses add up and i only am in top 5 of penaalty mnutes cause i went on a rampage l;ast night with 18 minutes in a single game forgetting all the other games

sorry i wasn't around to play much this weekend. i got three games in friday, and that was it. i'll be able to either get a lot of games in this week, or absolutely zero depending on if i take a trip this week or not. i doubt i do, so i should be around and hopefully i can contribute to some wins for the team.

those penalty minutes for some are skewed because every check is a cross check in that game, and when you are in front trying to put home a rebound you end up checking a guy instead of shooting the puck.

lets do this.

nate, those totals are only up to Saturday morning...however i'll turn those +/- into per game stats...that should level out the issue you bring up

I've seen some GOD-AWFUL play recently. This team was ranked 23rd as late as last Wed-Thurs. There are too many people that want to do one or more of the following: 1) rush the puck all the way down the ice passing up passes to wide open teammates only to get triple teamed and lose the puck, 2) some of these are defensemen, 3) defensemen don't play defense in general - I saw about 8 two on nones in one game, 4) too many stupid penalties behind the play.

It has gotten really frustrating playing some of these lately. There is a learning curve to be sure. I know I was -18 after the 1st week, but have gotten it back to even, maybe slightly positive in the past week. There have been some games, though, that no matter how well you ply, your team is going to lose 4-1 because people are completely out of position for most of the game. It just sucks.

Then I'll play with decent players and beat the hell out of most teams. It just makes the contrast that more noticeable. :(

I think I'm going to try a new camera tonight. The default one is cool because it really gets you in the feel that its focused on you and what not, but a lot of times it is hard to see what you may have trailing behind you and it just takes some options away. Anyone have any suggestions on the best camera angle? I've been doing fine with the default, but sometimes I try to make a blind pass behind me and I don't even see a defender there, and sometimes it's hard to see who's rushing down the wing with you when you carry the puck down the wall.

you think ps3 is doing sucky, tPB are fighting(well not even fighting) to stay in the top 100 for divison 2, i think we had a maximum of 5 games this weekend, i dont know what evevryone else is doing but noone seems to be even trying anymore..

Aron said...

i'd be up to a camera change as well if anyone has suggestions...i've been horrible the last 10-15 games

poker guru:

there is definitely a contrast with who you play with... I play a lot of D and it is very noticeable when you play with those that never pass and always go for the quick attempt (leading to instant turnover).

As far as the camera thing goes. Try Overhead or Classic. I was way out of position before I started using these cameras. It does take some adjustment, but I think you'll find you see the plays develop a whole lot better. As for +/- a bunch of us got screwed when we tried to have human goalies at the beginning. I know I was in at least 3 6-1 6-0 games early on that really nailed my +/-.

voodoo said...

Also, here's how we get killed: 4-5 humans vs 2 humans. Almost every time we're dead. I know this from playing all of the previous NHL games. It's just a whole helluva lot easier to play when you completely control when your teammates pass to you. The guys we're losing to are often groups of 2 people who play really well together and also know how to get the most out of the computer players. We may want to consider not playing 2v4+ games anymore. I know there seem to be a lot of ppl that when I've been on a 2 man team they quit out.

Randy Richter said...

thanks for the camera options. i'll try them out. i was in the same situation with at least 3 or 4 human goalie games where we lost like 8-0, which killed my +/-. i've worked it up to a respectable -8ish, but it was at like -30 at some point.

i also agree that 4/5 humans vs. 2 humans is a disadvantage, but it's a lot more fun so i don't mind them even if it means a loss or even less point production.

I'm a solid +90 in 70 something games

Nate8724 said...

oo no no no im not complaining but when 3 people on our team have a plus +/- it is obvious we suck lol

nate - speak for yourself!

lol

Aron said...

hopefully the camera change, will get me out of my funk

jaos said...

i totally agree regarding the 4/5 vs 2 people... those are the games we always lose. And all of the big wins I can remember have been with me and another playing together.

Heroes tonight and then NHL09!

kevonic622 said...

make a pro team!!! its less frustrating and much more fun playing with people who pass!!!

kevonic622 said...

oh and its hell of a lot easier to play with 4 humans...as long as they know how to play their position...

when i play lw i usually stay around a human controlled player cause they will call for the pass...if i shut them down its usually the whole team that gets shut down considering the computer sucks...oh plus me being a beast helps

What Kev Said is key. Watching the Human players is soooooo key.

Poker Guru said...

I agree with the pro team idea - I was already talking to another player about doing just that. Have been playing with WAY too many people that have no clue how to play their position. It is extremely frustrating to win 4-1 when playing with anyone decent then losing 5-1 when D that don't play D are in the game. Defensemen behind the attacking goal - wtf?

I mean, if you've played over 50 games and you are AVERAGING minus .75 or worse - get a clue. You need work.

Forwards that don't pass...ugh...it's just horrible and extremely frustrating.

Nate8724 said...

wow that complaint didnt work out i went up in the plus minus dept... lol

Nate8724 said...

if u make pro team theres noone to be on it our entire team is minus i play my pos. and i still get scored on so w/e

Nate8724 said...

people who dont bring down people who do play their pos. scores down

Poker Guru said...

Obviously almost the entire team is a minus - but that's a function as the team as a whole. Do you want the guy who is a -5 or the one who is -75? I played with someone that was a pretty large minus last night figuring how bad it could be. I saw - and it wasn't pretty. Every minus was well deserved. Two on zeros, defensemen behind the attacking zone goal - absolutely ridiculous.

Obviously this is a game for fun, but personally, I don't have fun losing like that, when I know I win at least 75% of the time when playing with someone decent.

We should at least try it for a while and see how it goes. If not, I'll just branch out on my own, I guess - getting killed is no fun for me.

I haven't played with a ton of people, but of those I have, the ones I know I usually win with are wildthing202 and blackatom. We all play fwd, yet are back on D and aren't up ice cherry-picking causing mismatches down low.

Used to play more with tjenk6687, but that haven't lately - seemed good enough at the time.

I know there are others I can't think of off the top of my head, but we can keep it sort of small at first (8-10 people) and kick the ones out that are obvious liabilities and get others in to try to make the team til they prove they can't hack it.

Thoughts?

Well than, you could always back out of the lockerroom when you see somebody who doesn't meet your standards, and prevent cutting the team in half.
I've only played 10 games, but most of the guys I've played with haven't played stupid hockey. I've played D most of the time and the only times I remember being caught out of position were in the last 5 minutes of games where the forwards couldn't generate offense by themselves. Of course jumping in the play only helps if guys pass, but whatever. The worst of those came with Mike in goal who was playing his butt off so I felt pretty crappy about that.

But whatever, I luckily haven't been in one of those 1-6 killings I keep hearing about (or I've blocked it out), so even the 2-3 losses have been fun for me because we were always in it. I guess I understand the frustration of you guys who have been.

Guru... I will be on tonight. Schedule has been rough... juggling 4 hockey teams, kids BDay this past weekend... Hopefully I can bring some punishing shutdown D tonight. Just bring the goals!!!

It would be nice if EA World had team pages that updated stats. I had a 5-0 night last night (well after that retarded 6-2 loss where dump ins and guys getting checked turned into goals) and my stats jumped way up

Paul said...

Enough with the Monistat moments.

Yes, there are people who refuse to pass, or forecheck, or call for a pass from the goalie, or ... well play a good game.

I've played tons of games with poor forwards, but you just have to play with the people that you like to play with. Back out if you don't want to play with them.

Yes, I take penalties I shouldn't, but who doesn't. It's fun, plus if you can get a human player riled up enough he will forget about most things - fight me - then he is gone for 5. I had a player on Friday message me on my PS3 personally to stop attacking him, and I was being unfair. lol

My personal favortie team has to be:

LW: Polish
RW: Owen
C: Kev
D: Derek (the Bert to my Ernie)
D: Samsara

Honorable mention: Alex, Caanan, Aron, and Jaos (when he is a D)

we brought some pain last night i think at one point we were 41st in D1

woooo thanks for the shoutouts guru and paul

so uh whats the deal with the team?

Poker Guru said...

I apologize to those that seem offended that I want to win. Weeding out bad players in the lockerroom is hardly an option.

I think you can only be a part of one "team" at any given time. If that wasn't the case, that would avoid this altogether, but since you are forced to only play in one, I'd like it to be a good one.

If this larger team doesn't end up splitting into two, that's fine, but if it doesn't I will definitely try to split off and create a team that can take a run and see how high we can climb.

This is one of the best games ever, and I don't want to be stuck in quicksand when I'm trying to run a sprint.

Paul said...

We had a great run last night. Drunk Canaan scored a hatty, Owen and Polish were playing like Ron Francis. Derek and I were shutting them down between making out and writing poetry.

Plus I'm 18-7 fighting so far. Boosh!

eh i thought i played pretty good. i atleast had fun playing with you guys. Im not going to get fired up over getting kicked off a video game team. so oh well. best of luck to you

eze3484 said...

You guys cut based on # of games or quality of play?

Poker Guru said...

I heard the GMs cut guys that didn't have many games played, but that's the only thing I know.

CK3 said...

Guru, are you saying you're dying alive on Team Pensblog? :)

I'm not offended, I just don't agree, but my opinion hardly matters since I only average a game a day. The guys playing 5 games a night have to enjoy it or else the team dies from the top down. I hope we stop playing "sucky hockey" and the discussion ends there.

Poker Guru said...

Most games are just fine, as based on the time of day, I play with the same players a lot. I just happened to play a few games at a time I usually don't and saw horrible hockey. Last I saw the team was down to division 2. A week ago it was 23rd in division 1. It doesn't take a genius to connect the dots.

For now, I'll just keep showing up at my usual time and playing. I'd like to, at some point in the future, get a top team together, though. Maybe once the bad players get bored...[fingers crossed]

wildthing202 said...

I think it's just the number of teams & the low number of games they played has something to do with it. There's almost no one in division 1 that has play as many games as we have. That said from what I saw yesterday the 1st place team hadn't even played 50 games, they were at 46 & I saw that the 3rd place team lost 6 in a row. We get harshly punished by losses than by winning since going into yesterday we were around 27-28 under .500 to 20 games under as of today and yet we lost ground in div. 1 and 2.
