well, i played over 600 games online on nhl08.. and was usually ranked between 1-2k. right now im around 800 on nhl09, with 30 games in.
i will admit i havent played BAP online yet, but am on the 1st line in the AHL offline -- with 17 points (8g/9a) in 10 games. dont know how well that really is.
plus i really, really hate to lose.

Offline is too easy. I'm already on the second line of the Pens and I've played like 25 or so games.

Why is it when I score 4 goals in a game the top highlights are 3 inconsequential saves or a goal the other team scored?

If they're sweet penalties like a diarrhea inducing check then it's totally worth it.
...which isn't what mine are. They're just high sticks from stick lifting too much.
i totally dish out some nasty hits. it seems like you can give more in your own zone, some in the neutral, and get called almost always in the offensive zone. Not sure if that is 100% true or just anecdotal.
